Once again, they are out with the list
of most dangerous toys. And I wonder, how safe will toys have to become
before the most dangerous among them
are not dangerous enough to make the list?
And what about sticks? They're all over
the place where any kid can just come along and pick them up and poke
themselves in the eye. And don't even
get me started on rocks. How many rock-throwing children will cause
damage to themselves and to property
all in the name of good fun? I think that trees, sticks, rocks, water,
sports,
and scissors should all be banned because,
if it saves even one life, it's worth it.
As it relates to the automobile, we know
that the number of lives lost on our highways drop as the speed limit is
(dramatically) lowered. For instance,
I think it's safe to say that the loss of life would be near zero if the
speed limit
was 2 miles per hour. That would save
tens of thousands of innocent lives each year. But those lives are worth
losing so that we can all get to where
we're going in a timely manner and in the fashion to which we are
accustomed.
Each year, many innocent lives are lost
walking down the stairs. Should a law be in place dictating that all houses
be built with only one floor? And should
we then bulldoze those which now have stairs?
How many people are electrocuted each
year? Wouldn't many innocent lives be spared if we only did away with
electricity? Bicycles? Walking?
The phrase, "Even if it saves one life,
it's worth it" is mindless blather. The only time we time we take it into
consideration is when it is someone
else's money or inconvenience at stake.
End of rant.
