Posted by bernie on 10/18/2001, 9:36 am, in reply to "A Memo to American Muslims" IMO, the conflict shaping up in the world today is a conflict between modernism and knowledge (scientific knowledge that is) and ancient, ingrained "traditional" views without merit or support. If people would just calm down and let the facts and all speak for themselves, modernism would simply win out by default. (That is, one has to assume that all other things being equal, no rational person from any culture is going to choose sickness, death, disease, hunger, misery and ignorance over their opposites - which is what everyone gets just to start with in modern nations). Note this does not mean modern nations have no problems: they do! But they also have the means to solve them (the only means btw, that can and ever does, work). But what has happened is that evrywhere there are still religions around the world. I am not against the Muslim faith any more than the Catholic or the Mormons or who-have-you. The problem is that EVERY issue that confronts mankind now runs the almost automatic risk of being converted into a religious dispute (such as this business of modern versus ancient is being converted into war of West or really Judeo-Xians against Islam). Religious people of all faiths, with their idiotic insistence to the death on the "validity" of the ideas of madmen: fairy tales of what the Universe is, how it began, "why" there is disease in the first place, fantasies of afterlifes, and on and on are the single greatest CAUSE (IMO) of the continued misery in this world. The war we are now entering will, I have no doubt, become as they are already saying, a war of religions - that of the West and the East. Back to archive index
