Two centuries later and a continent away, Lowell, the wealthy scion of the famous New England snobs, (and others before him too) corrupted or mis-translated this into their dream fantasy as "canals" of a dying race of Martians. The whole thing is an accident of language... like the stupidities you pander here in re so-called psychic affairs.
